Jill, I have been a nurse for 21 years. I’ve worked everything from NICU to Surgical Services. I’ve taken care of 28 week preemies and centurians. Is it easy, never…but that’s exactly what makes it rewarding!
What is your greatest joy? My greatest joy is being able to look back on over 20 years of nursing and knowing I have affected thousands of lives – I’ve made a difference. I’ve helped save lives and I’ve helped those cope with the loss of life. I can go to the grocery store, the mall, a hockey game – and be remembered by those I’ve only spent a few hours with.
What is your greatest fear?
There are days that are much harder than others, those days I come home and the last thing I want to do is go to my kids concert, sporting event, play, etc. I feel guilty that I can give too much of myself at work and don’t have enough left for my family at the end of the day.
What frustrates you the most?
The way that medicine has changed. With the advent of the internet, television shows, etc. Patients and families can be very demanding – base their expectations on what they see on tv or read online. Nursing, medicine, health care needs to be respected again. We’ve become a “service industry” – it’s kind of sad.
What’s your greatest challenge?
Balancing working full time as a nurse and full time as a wife/mother. In a way, your teens need you more now, than when they were babies.
What have you learned?
God doesn’t give you what you can handle, God helps you handle what you are given. :-)
